Cristina Solis Class of 2013
Cristina Solis, a junior, has just completed her second year at HHS. She feels that the teachers have been very welcoming. “Teachers are there for you if you need help, you can talk to them about anything and they’ll listen to you.”
Cristina has taken advantage of some of the hands-on opportunities to learn about the hospitality industry. She participated in the summer internship, and she can feel the difference between this program and her other options. “I had to do an application as if I were applying for an actual job. For the summer youth employment program you already have a job, but here you are really getting a real world job.” Cristina, and many others like her, had to interview with Human Resources managers from area hotels and meet their approval in order to receive a paid internship.
Cristina also appreciates the efforts made by the school to make students aware of scholarships that are available to them. As she says, “Ms. Carter (the guidance counselor) sends you e-mails about scholarship opportunities.” Cristina is also anxiously awaiting the results of this year’s DC-CAS results. If she scores proficient in Reading and in Math, she will be eligible for up to $500 in scholarship money.
